The Hog Blog: Is the Next Head Coach Already In Place?
by Ryan Nash
Good bye Gregg Williams. And see you later Al Saunders. Four and two years respectively, and the Redskins at least got more playoff victories(one) during the Gibbs' Comeback Era than the Dallas Cowboys have had in the last 12 years. But ultimately, Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato were looking for more. The inadequacy of Saunders' mammoth playbook, and collapse of Williams' defense led to their departures. Greg Blache, who came over to Washington from Chicago when Gibbs returned, was promoted to Defensive Coordinator. Jim Zorn, a former player/coach for the Seattle Seahawks, was recently hired as offensive coordinator. But since the weeks have passed that Gibbs retired, no Head Coach has been named.
Could it have been Bill Cowher? Jim Fassel and Steve Mariucchi appear to be the front-runners now. But if that was the case, why would they be hiring coaches without naming the Head Coach first? Fassel and Mooch are no longer currently employed by any of the 32 teams, so wouldn't they have been hired already, to join the coaching staff being assembled for them? Perhaps they are just being run around in circles, while the real Head Coach-in-waiting is just trying to win a Super Bowl this Sunday.
Steve Spagnuolo and Josh McDaniels are the two hot candidates when it comes to who isn't eligible to be hired at the moment. Spagnuolo, in his first season as Defensive Coordinator for the New York Giants, has extensive experience with the NFC East. Before his gig of the moment, he served as an assistant to Jim Johnson with the Philadelphia Eagles. It is the defense he is leading that has carried the Giants to the Super Bowl. Spagnuolo has devised many creative ways to utilize the plethora of talented defensive ends he has at his disposal, including shifting Mathias Kiwanuka to linebacker.
Josh McDaniels is the hot-shot 31 year old phenom. Of course, who wouldn't look good with Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, a vastly underrated offensive line, and the Man himself, Bill Belichick there to help him out. While McDaniels has been there through all of New England's Super Bowl teams, how much credit does he deserve?
This is purely speculation, but I believe that when the dust settles, one of these will emerge with the top job in the Nation's Capital. Neither Zorn nor Blache are Jason Garrett. And Snyder isn't Jerry Jones. So why hire assistant coaches before having a head coach? Is it because you can not tab who's your guy without violating league rules? If this were the case, it would surprise me less than the overdose of Anna Nicole Smith. Hopefully, we'll know the real answer by next week.
