BUF: Everett Injury Update

Buffalo Bills TE Kevin Everett remains in a state of medically-induced sedation Tuesday after suffering a fractured cervical spine in Sunday's opening loss to the Denver Broncos.

The latest reports from Everett's doctors say that a full recovery is not likely.

Everett's surgeon, Dr. Andrew Cappuccino, performed a four-hour operation on Sunday night, and later said that he thinks that there will be at least some permanent neurological damage.

Cappuccino noted that Everett was conscious and aware of the seriousness of his injuries before the surgery was performed, and that he did have some touch sensation throughout his body prior to the operation.  He also stressed, however, that Everett's condition was still life-threatening and that a recovery will be difficult.

Everett was injured on the opening kickoff of the second half in Sunday's game, while trying to making a tackle during the return.  Everett was motionless on the field for nearly fifteen minutes as the rest of his Buffalo Bills teammates knelt in prayer.

Everett's status will be evaluated and monitored heavily in the coming days, after which he will be taken out of sedation when the full extent of his injuries are known.

The Bills have already placed Everett on the Injured Reserve list and picked up former Panthers TE Michael Gaines as well as pre-season roster member Matt Murphy.

Head Coach Dick Jauron, in a press conference on Monday, stressed the importance of getting back to work while keeping Kevin in the team's thoughts.

Brian Moorman, the Bills' punter and special teams captain, said that this was the closest team he had been on in Buffalo.

"I hope this is the last time I'll ever have to choke back tears on the middle of the playing field," Moorman said.  "You keep waiting for that thumbs up...but he never gave it."

The Bills lost the season opener 15-14 on a last second field goal by the Broncos' Jason Elam.  They will play at the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday at 1:00 pm.
